Liverpool fans call for boycott of Hull City game

A Liverpool supporters' group is planning a boycott of the club's match against Hull City in protest over what it claims are high ticket prices.

The Spirit of Shankly group said Hull City was "monetising the fans' loyalty" by charging £50 for the match at the KC Stadium on Tuesday.

Group chair James McKenna compared the price with the £16 charged to Stoke City and Burnley fans.

Hull City was unwilling to comment when contacted by the BBC.

Mr McKenna said that last season Liverpool supporters were charged £35 and fans at the rival Merseyside club, Everton, paid £35 for a fixture against Hull City on New Year's Day.

"It sticks in the throat a bit for supporters that we should be expected to cough up more to see them just because we are Liverpool," he said.

'So angry'

The Spirit of Shankly organisation is campaigning for clubs to cap away ticket prices.

Liverpool supporters held up a banner protesting against the cost of football when Hull City played at Anfield in October.

Mr McKenna said the group had been contacted by a number of supporters from across the UK who have pledged to take part in the boycott.

"I think we are looking at around 400 to 500 supporters already... who are saying they'll take part in this," he said.

"For us it's not whether the entire end is empty but it's just to demonstrate to Hull - and I think to football clubs around the country - that supporters are so angry."

The previous system, which relied on European results over the last five years, has been scrapped and replaced with a new one that gives precedence to teams winning their domestic titles.

It means no country can possibly have more than two teams in the top set of seeds.

The winners of the 2014-15 Champions League will be joined as top seeds by the winners of the titles in England, Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, Germany and Russia.

If the Champions League winner is also their domestic league winner, then the champions of the eighth-ranked association Holland - PSV Eindhoven - would be added to the list of top seeds despite only ranking 30th in the UEFA club coefficient list.

With Chelsea well on their way to winning the Premier League, it will mean Arsenal and Manchester United dropping into the second pot of seeds if they qualify for next year's tournament.

Manchester City have now dropped out of UEFA's top 16 clubs, falling behind Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen, so if they make it into the competition, a tough draw would be likely.

City missed out on a top-seeding last year, even as Premier League champions, and ended up struggling through a group that included Bayern Munich, CSKA Moscow and Roma before being knocked out by Barcelona in the round-of-16.

UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino said: "Football is about winning, it's about competition, it's about sporting merit. I think it's kind of a natural thing to give to those who have won a competition a special treatment like this."

Not Finding Out The Football Scores

There are some very strange contributions in your mailbox from yesterday regarding the entertainment value of our/your league leaders.

Games at this stage of the season involving potential champions, relegation candidates and local rivals to boot are obviously going to be tense affairs. At the tightest ground in the division (is it still called a division?) with a vociferous, angry home support, abusing practically the entire team and staff, without their talisman and back up striker, did these individuals seriously expect a performance from Chelsea on a par with Brazil's 1970 World Cup final victory or the Glaziers demolition of Sunderland? Get a grip people.

Compared to the Liverpool Newcastle game I just watched, which in fairness was lit up by Coutinho, the Chelsea game was far superior as a spectacle and a fine, fine victory. Also, I'd expect Mourinho to be in your Winners section if you're putting Rui Faria in the Losers' for the exact same reasons. Just find another stick to beat the club with.

I'm a Chelsea fan (I like to think I'm one of the nice ones) and wanted to write in to say a few bits regarding this 'Boring, Boring Chelsea' business

Firstly, I get it. If you have no interest in the team I can see how the way we set up the team to cancel out our opponents can make for a dull affair for the neutrals. However, if you're watching it with blue tinted glasses it is far from boring. It is a stressful, painful yet thrilling affair. In this latter part of the season where our form is worryingly bad you're kicking every ball, screaming at every misplaced pass and consuming furniture with your backside.Trust me and my high blood pressure every weekend when I say, boring it is not!

Claiming that with our attacking options we should be playing this silky beautiful football. If you have been paying attention then you'd know that we're shattered. Jose doesn't do rotation, it's something that has always annoyed me about him and all of our players (apart from Hazard who has the stamina of a ultra-marathon athlete) just haven't got the legs anymore. They're paid unbelievable amounts but at the end of the day they are human and all humans get fatigue (unless your club ships you off to Jamaica for a mid-season break).

The attacking and free flowing football we produced at the start of the season (we did, stop laughing at the back) just isn't feasible at this time of year. At present we just have to soak up attacks and when we get a chance pass it to Eden 'Gebrselassie' Hazard to work his magic. Failing that we wait for a goalie to c*ck up.

Manchester United can overhaul City and finish second - Juan Mata

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata says his team can overhaul neighbours Manchester City and claim the Premier League runners-up place.

After the final international break of the season, the quest for a Champions League place continues this weekend.

Back-to-back wins against Tottenham and Liverpool have put fourth-placed United two points behind second-placed City.

"We are one point and two points from City and Arsenal and I think we can do it," Mata told the BBC Football Focus.

"We can even be second if we win the direct games against them."

United host strugglers Aston Villa on Saturday in a 15:00 BST kick-off, before welcoming local rivals City a week on Sunday. Arsenal visit Old Trafford in the penultimate game of United's season on Sunday, 17 May.
