De Bruyne: Jose spoke to me twice at Chelsea

Manchester City’s £54m man Kevin de Bruyne claims Jose Mourinho only spoke to him twice during the time they worked together at Chelsea. The Belgian signed for Chelsea from Genk as a 20-year-old in January 2012 but failed to establish himself at Stamford Bridge, playing only three Premier League games for the Blues. He was sold to Wolfsburg two years later and his form in the Bundesliga persuaded Manchester City to break their transfer record for the second time this summer. The fee raised eyebrows given his previous spell in England but there may have been underlying factors behind De Bruyne’s failure at Chelsea. “I only talked with him twice, Mourinho,” De Bruyne told several national newspapers ahead of his expected first City start against West Ham. “One was before a game against Basle, where he said I was doing better in his opinion and that I would get my chance. Sepp Blatter's right-hand man suspended from duties amid claims he was involved in a World Cup ticket scam.

The length, depth and breadth of the scandal enveloping FIFA expanded to within one step of the president’s office overnight when Jerome Valcke, Sepp Blatter’s trusted No2, was relieved of his duties with immediate effect.

The Frenchman was released ‘effective immediately’ from his role as secretary-general after another tumultuous week. On Monday the United States Attorney-General Loretta Lynch warned of more arrests in the offing. Then, yesterday afternoon, came complex allegations involving Valcke over World Cup ticket sales.

Valcke was not immediately available for comment, having turned around a charter flight to Russia where he had been heading for events marking 1,000 days to the country’s staging of the 2018 World Cup finals. His FIFA duties will be taken over on an interim basis by finance director Markus Kattner.

In line with FIFA statutes the only man with authority over the employment status of the secretary-general is the president, with the approval of the executive committee. Hence Blatter duly conferred with the members of the emergency committee, the heads of the six regional confederations including UEFA’s Michel Platini.

A statement from the world football federation said: “FIFA today announced that its secretary-general, Jerome Valcke, has been put on leave and released from his duties effective immediately until further notice. Further, FIFA has been made aware of a series of allegations involving the secretary-general and has requested a formal investigation by the FIFA ethics committee.”

Cornel Borbely, chairman of the investigatory chamber of the ethics committee, followed up with a statement of apparent confirmation.

This statement said: “The Investigatory Chamber of the independent Ethics Committee takes note of the media release of FIFA from Thursday night. The chamber points out that – as a matter of principle – it will analyze all information that is brought to its attention of its own accord. The question of whether an investigation is pending in a specific case, will not be commented upon.”

The intriguing note struck by the FIFA statement was in separating Valcke’s release ‘from his duties’ from a subsequent reference to the allegations which had erupted about complex allegations concerning World Cup ticket sales.

During all the latest scandals swirling around FIFA Valcke has remained a solid figure at the core of the world football federation, keeping the operation ticking over.

Only one recent issue brought him to the scandal’s centre stage. This was the controversial £10m payment made by the 2010 South African World Cup organisers to the former CONCACAF president Jack Warner. Valcke insisted that he had effected the payment out of funds due to the South Africans and was only obeying orders from the late Julio Grondona, then FIFA’s finance chairman.

Valcke had been expected to leave FIFA after the election of a new president next February 26. He made his impending departure plain during a news conference on the eve of the World Cup qualifying draw in St Petersburg in July. Speculation has followed this week that he was already negotiating the terms of his departure but had failed to reach agreement.

Outrageous accusations
Yesterday afternoon Valcke was the focus of a news briefing about his reported role with regard to World Cup ticket sales.

The allegations concerned a claim by a Zurich company, JB Sports Marketing, that it had been misled by Valcke over a contract with FIFA to sell VIP ticket packages for the 2013 Confederations Cup and 2014 World Cup.

Benny Alon, a former Israeli footballer now resident in Arizona. said JB had understood that the surplus of up to four times the face value of the tickets themselves would be split 50/50 with FIFA, with Valcke undertaking a personal role as go-between.

Later FIFA assigned the contract to the Byrom-owned Match companies whose subsidiaries held exclusive rights for hospitality on the one hand and ‘FIFA family’ ticketing on the other. JB complained later that the tickets delivered were not of the grade for which it had paid.

Alon was reported in France as being ‘close to’ Michel Platini, the president of European federation UEFA who is favourite to succeed Blatter as head of FIFA.

Within hours Valcke’s lawyer, Barry Berke, issued a vehement denial of any wrongdoing.

Berke said “Jerome Valcke unequivocally denies the fabricated and outrageous accusations by Benny Alon of alleged wrongdoing in connection with the sale of World Cup tickets.

“Mr Valcke never received or agreed to accept any money or anything else of value from Mr Alon.

“As has been reported, FIFA entered into an agreement with Mr Alon’s company, JB Sports Marketing. That agreement and FIFA’s subsequent business dealings with Mr Alon were vetted and approved by FIFA and its legal counsel.”

Both Valcke and Blatter had hired US lawyers to represent their interests in the wake of the US Department of Justice investigation into the so-called FIFAGate corruption scandal. Berke is counsel with the New York firm Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel

Nathaniel Clyne: Liverpool £10m bid rejected by Southampton

Liverpool have had a £10m bid for England right-back Nathaniel Clyne rejected by Southampton.

Clyne, 24, has become a target for the Reds with full-back Glen Johnson, 30, at the end of his Anfield contract.

They are expected to return with an improved offer for the former Crystal Palace player, who has one year left on his contract at St Mary's.

Liverpool are also pursuing Burnley striker Danny Ings and Manchester City midfielder James Milner.

The Anfield club are attempting to rebuild following a disappointing season under manager Brendan Rodgers, in which they finished sixth in the Premier league - two points above Southampton in seventh place - and failed to win a trophy.

Clyne joined the Saints from Palace in July 2012 and is under contract until the summer of 2016.

Liverpool took Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert from Southampton last summer for a combined total of almost £50m.

Before Gutierrez's departure was formally announced, he urged Ashley to consider what must be done to move the club forward after a last major trophy win in 1969.

Asked what needs to happen at Newcastle this summer, he told the Shields Gazette: “That’s a good question for the owner.

“I think the club has to learn what has happened in the last few years when they have been in charge of the club.

“It’s important to think about good and bad decisions. It’s good for learning, and to improve. They have to take note about what has happened during the last few years.

“They have to think what they are going to do, if they are going to go forward. They have to think about what is best for the city.”

Liverpool fans call for boycott of Hull City game

A Liverpool supporters' group is planning a boycott of the club's match against Hull City in protest over what it claims are high ticket prices.

The Spirit of Shankly group said Hull City was "monetising the fans' loyalty" by charging £50 for the match at the KC Stadium on Tuesday.

Group chair James McKenna compared the price with the £16 charged to Stoke City and Burnley fans.

Hull City was unwilling to comment when contacted by the BBC.

Mr McKenna said that last season Liverpool supporters were charged £35 and fans at the rival Merseyside club, Everton, paid £35 for a fixture against Hull City on New Year's Day.

"It sticks in the throat a bit for supporters that we should be expected to cough up more to see them just because we are Liverpool," he said.

'So angry'

The Spirit of Shankly organisation is campaigning for clubs to cap away ticket prices.

Liverpool supporters held up a banner protesting against the cost of football when Hull City played at Anfield in October.

Mr McKenna said the group had been contacted by a number of supporters from across the UK who have pledged to take part in the boycott.

"I think we are looking at around 400 to 500 supporters already... who are saying they'll take part in this," he said.

"For us it's not whether the entire end is empty but it's just to demonstrate to Hull - and I think to football clubs around the country - that supporters are so angry."

The previous system, which relied on European results over the last five years, has been scrapped and replaced with a new one that gives precedence to teams winning their domestic titles.

It means no country can possibly have more than two teams in the top set of seeds.

The winners of the 2014-15 Champions League will be joined as top seeds by the winners of the titles in England, Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, Germany and Russia.

If the Champions League winner is also their domestic league winner, then the champions of the eighth-ranked association Holland - PSV Eindhoven - would be added to the list of top seeds despite only ranking 30th in the UEFA club coefficient list.

With Chelsea well on their way to winning the Premier League, it will mean Arsenal and Manchester United dropping into the second pot of seeds if they qualify for next year's tournament.

Manchester City have now dropped out of UEFA's top 16 clubs, falling behind Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen, so if they make it into the competition, a tough draw would be likely.

City missed out on a top-seeding last year, even as Premier League champions, and ended up struggling through a group that included Bayern Munich, CSKA Moscow and Roma before being knocked out by Barcelona in the round-of-16.

UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino said: "Football is about winning, it's about competition, it's about sporting merit. I think it's kind of a natural thing to give to those who have won a competition a special treatment like this."

Not Finding Out The Football Scores

There are some very strange contributions in your mailbox from yesterday regarding the entertainment value of our/your league leaders.

Games at this stage of the season involving potential champions, relegation candidates and local rivals to boot are obviously going to be tense affairs. At the tightest ground in the division (is it still called a division?) with a vociferous, angry home support, abusing practically the entire team and staff, without their talisman and back up striker, did these individuals seriously expect a performance from Chelsea on a par with Brazil's 1970 World Cup final victory or the Glaziers demolition of Sunderland? Get a grip people.

Compared to the Liverpool Newcastle game I just watched, which in fairness was lit up by Coutinho, the Chelsea game was far superior as a spectacle and a fine, fine victory. Also, I'd expect Mourinho to be in your Winners section if you're putting Rui Faria in the Losers' for the exact same reasons. Just find another stick to beat the club with.

I'm a Chelsea fan (I like to think I'm one of the nice ones) and wanted to write in to say a few bits regarding this 'Boring, Boring Chelsea' business

Firstly, I get it. If you have no interest in the team I can see how the way we set up the team to cancel out our opponents can make for a dull affair for the neutrals. However, if you're watching it with blue tinted glasses it is far from boring. It is a stressful, painful yet thrilling affair. In this latter part of the season where our form is worryingly bad you're kicking every ball, screaming at every misplaced pass and consuming furniture with your backside.Trust me and my high blood pressure every weekend when I say, boring it is not!

Claiming that with our attacking options we should be playing this silky beautiful football. If you have been paying attention then you'd know that we're shattered. Jose doesn't do rotation, it's something that has always annoyed me about him and all of our players (apart from Hazard who has the stamina of a ultra-marathon athlete) just haven't got the legs anymore. They're paid unbelievable amounts but at the end of the day they are human and all humans get fatigue (unless your club ships you off to Jamaica for a mid-season break).

The attacking and free flowing football we produced at the start of the season (we did, stop laughing at the back) just isn't feasible at this time of year. At present we just have to soak up attacks and when we get a chance pass it to Eden 'Gebrselassie' Hazard to work his magic. Failing that we wait for a goalie to c*ck up.

Manchester United can overhaul City and finish second - Juan Mata

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata says his team can overhaul neighbours Manchester City and claim the Premier League runners-up place.

After the final international break of the season, the quest for a Champions League place continues this weekend.

Back-to-back wins against Tottenham and Liverpool have put fourth-placed United two points behind second-placed City.

"We are one point and two points from City and Arsenal and I think we can do it," Mata told the BBC Football Focus.

"We can even be second if we win the direct games against them."

United host strugglers Aston Villa on Saturday in a 15:00 BST kick-off, before welcoming local rivals City a week on Sunday. Arsenal visit Old Trafford in the penultimate game of United's season on Sunday, 17 May.
